Happy Easter!
Wishing our Tumaini friends and family a love filled and peaceful Easter with our deepest gratitude for your continued support . . . kwa wote, Asante Sana!!
Born in Toronto, Ontario in 1961, Cherie grew up in typical, middle class neighborhoods in Mississauga, Burlington, Hamilton and most recently Simcoe, Ontario. She attended Mohawk College and McMaster University in Hamilton (Women’s Studies & Religious Studies) and has worked in real estate since 1980 in administration, accounting, management and sales and has assisted her husband as a ginseng farmer since 1992. She has two adult step children, Amanda and Stephen and is “Mama” to the “watoto” (children) of Tumaini!
Cherie worked for years as a volunteer with the Burlington Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce); has been involved, for over a decade, with Girl Guides Canada as a troop leader and regional director; she has worked for several years as a mentor with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization; and has volunteered on several different committees within her church. Early in 2009 Cherie tended to her dying father (prostate cancer) nursing him through his death in April. Shortly after his funeral she vowed to realize a lifelong dream to “give back” some of the many blessings she has enjoyed over the years. Africa, and its’ terrible need has tugged at her heart for many years.
A local newspaper ran an article on Tanzania and helping children and the link was Oddo. They met initially over the internet, Cherie decided to make a trip to Tanzania to investigate and the rest as they say, is history. The two of them teamed together and Tumaini Children’s Foundation was born. Tumaini was registered in Tanzania (2009) as an N.G.O under The Non-Governmental Organization Act, 2002 (No. 00003232), , and in February of 2010 we received our charitable status in Canada.
The needs of the children of Tanzania are immeasurable by western standards. Deplorable living conditions, malaria, HIV/AIDS, all have contributed to an inhumane standard of living and we must help.A home was leased and children in desperate and immediate need were brought into our care. Initially numbering twenty four, we quickly grew to our present number of 52 children.
Wishing our Tumaini friends and family a love filled and peaceful Easter with our deepest gratitude for your continued support . . . kwa wote, Asante Sana!!

I don’t know if I can explain myself properly and do not want to offend because I will brag about family, but I must try so please bear with me. My sister Pam left Tumaini last night with our newest Bibi (Janet) after three weeks of full on Tumaini loving. We escorted them, with Pendo […]
The roosters are crowing and this time its little Rashid sleeping with Mama. Yesterday morning, in their haste to climb down from their bunk beds, Tony pushed Rashid, who hit his head and split the back of it open. He rested in my room yesterday, after we butterflied his wound together but he still wanted […]
I was honored with the privilege of naming Reuben, biblically meaning, “Behold a Son!”, what Oddo secretly wished for to balance his family of two girls (Eliza and Ruthie) and now two boys, (with Chi, or Joseph). I explained that Reuben was the name of my Babu (grandfather) whom I loved very much at which […]
Things are good and busy and, as many of you who have already visited us here know, just a bit crazy . . . our heartfelt thanks go out to Caroline and the Hummelshoj family for embracing Esther with your sponsorship support. Also, to Collin Ferster of Canada for helping care for Harriri. To the Giglioti […]
A house fire last week took the lives of twin babies and displaced ten families. You would have been proud of our children . . . each went up to their shelves and chose an outfit to donate to those children who had lost everything they owned. We included two new mattresses and a cash […]
First of all, a happy, happy birthday to Angela! It was cake but no ice cream today for everyone but the sickies . . . (no electricity translates into no ice cream!) What a rough couple of days . . . things began with younger Daniel waking three mornings ago having susued in his bed […]
A Home Visit – “Shida” “Problem” Here? Shida Ningi! Many Problems! People ask all the time how our outreach begins, where the families we help come from, and how we choose those we will help. Bibi Lucia’s family and our recent visit to their home illustrate clearly the extreme conditions many people find themselves living […]
